László Andor on the future of the ESF: investing more in people and investing better

Speaking at the conference "Territorial Dimension of the European Social Fund", organised by the Polish Presidency of the EU in Warsaw, Commissioner László Andor highlighted the role of the European Social Fund in achieving the EU headline targets for 2020 and the "importance of regional and local partnerships to strengthen the fund's territorial dimension".

G20 labour-employment ministers meet today to look at how to strengthen employment and social policies within the overall G20 process. In the current difficult economic environment, the role of the employment Ministers and their contribution to the overall G20 discussions is particularly important. The two days of discussions will focus on employment policies, especially youth employment and vulnerable groups.

The Europe 2020 strategy, which provides a basis for all EU and national policies, sets out a socio-economic model based on smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, with a concrete commitment to achieve by 2020 an employment rate of 75%, a tertiary education completion rate of 40%, reduce school drop-outs below 10%, and lift at least 20 million people from the risk of poverty and social exclusion.
László Andor stresses investment in skills and education

In Gdansk today Commissioner László Andor took part in a conference about EU funds for employment focusing on the European Social Fund (ESF), the European Globalisation Fund (EGF) and Progress Microfinance. The Commissioner stressed that in the current economic situation it's essential to invest money in the areas that matter most, by "improving education and the skills of young people, expanding job opportunities for workers, giving those who have lost their jobs a fresh chance and working for a more inclusive labour market", as reflected in the Commission's proposals for the next financial framework 2014-2020.
László Andor at the MEDEF Summer University: focusing on the social dimension of globalisation

Speaking at the MEDEF (Movement of the French Enterprises) Summer University, in Paris, Commissioner László Andor called for stepping up efforts to fight unemployment, poverty and social exclusion, stressing that "a strong partnership with the social partners is essential to make it a success".
