Creating change [07-12]
Strijdom Van der Merwe – Tanqua Karoo, mixed media, 2007
This South African land artist drew the symbol for the poplar tree in the Ogham alphabet in black sand on the bottom of a dried up dam in the Tanqua Karoo in his native land. The area was once a large green wetland, but now receives the lowest amount of rainfall of any part of South Africa. Van der Merwe reminds us of the difference between what used to be and what exists now, as a result of climate change.
