Xavier Cortada – The Longitudinal Installation, installation at the South Pole, 2007
This American artist (www.cortada.com) placed 24 shoes in a circle around the South Pole, each representing a person living in a different part of the world affected by climate change. The shoes are positioned on the longitudinal line where each participant lives, while an accompanying board giving statements from each of them about how climate change is affecting them, or how it will do in the future.
Xavier Cortada plans to repeat his work at the North Pole in 2008, with a different set of ‘voices’. You can find out more and contribute to his work at: http://longitudinal-installation.blogspot.com/
