The EU is at the forefront of developing and implementing alternatives for ozone depleting substances. Literally for all applications alternatives are available and goods and processes depending on ODS are gradually been phased out. To promote the available alternatives domestically and internationally the EU has organised workshops and produced documentation.
The accelerated phase-out schedule for HCFCs agreed on at the 19th Meeting of the Parties of the Montreal Protocol increased the need to identify cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives. To support developing countries with this challenge the European Commission organised a technical meeting held on 5-6 April 2008 in Montreal, Canada. The meeting gathered and provided information on cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to HCFCs in the refrigeration/air-conditioning and foam sectors. The meeting also provided information on the technical tools for implementing viable alternatives.
The European Union has organised conferences on alternatives to methyl bromide in co-operation with other sponsors in 2002 and 2004. Those conferences were attended by experts from all over the world. They provided information about alternatives to methyl bromide for critical uses and quarantine & pre-shipment applications. They also focused on the related procedures and implementation of policy options. Detailed information about the content of the conferences and all related documents are available in our event section.
