Aligned with the Europe 2020 growth and job creation strategy, the Science in Society work programme 2013 earmarks  EUR 24 million to support six multi-stakeholder platforms engaging European citizens and civil society organisations in dialogue with the other social actors that are involved in research and innovation processes to address " societal challenges". A pilot action is also envisaged for 2013 to engage citizens in the preparation of the upcoming work programmes in H2020, in pursuit of involving citizens in the making process of major research decisions. The programme stimulates active citizen participation in EU policy-making by calling for collective reflexion and deliberations among stakeholders from academia, policy, industry and civil society in tackling societal challenges in ways that match up with the values, interests and needs of EU citizens.

The ambition of the work programme is to deepen the relationship between science and society, to reinforce public trust in science and to support an informed engagement of citizens and civil society on research and innovation matters by promoting science education, by making scientific knowledge more accessible, by promoting gender equality and the integration of the gender dimension in R&I contents and by developing responsible research and innovation agendas that meet citizen's and civil society's concerns and expectations and prepare their future participation in Horizon 2020 activities.
