Traineeships at the European Commission

Twice a year the European Commission recruits around 600 young people for in-service training for a period of 5 months.

The aims of the official in-service training with the Commission of the European Union are:

  • to provide young university graduates with a unique, first-hand experience of the workings of the European Commission in particular, and of the EU institutions in general. The training also aims to provide an understanding of the objectives and goals of the EU integration processes and policies;
  • to give trainees an opportunity to acquire practical experience and knowledge of the day-to-day work of the Commission Departments and Services. They will have an opportunity to work in a multicultural, multilingual and multiethnic environment, contributing to the development of mutual understanding, trust and tolerance. European integration will be promoted within the spirit of new governance and through active participation - creating an awareness of true European citizenship;
  • to give young university graduates the opportunity to put into practice knowledge acquired during their studies, particularly in their specific areas of competence. To introduce these graduates to the professional world and its constraints, duties and opportunities.

All trainees are awarded a monthly grant of 25% of the basic remuneration for an official at grade AD 5/1 (Commission Decision C/2007/1221). Further to that an allowance may be paid for travel expenses incurred between the place of recruitment (i.e. the permanent address declared in the application form) and the place of appointment, at the beginning and end of the training period.

Traineeships at the Council of the EU

With the aim of enabling European citizens to familiarise themselves with the European institutions, the General Secretariat of the Council offers various types of traineeships:

  • paid traineeships
  • compulsory training period as part of a student's studies
  • traineeships reserved for national officials

These traineeship possibilities are aimed chiefly at new graduates from universities or equivalent higher-education establishments.   They are for nationals of the EU Member States.

For nationals of a State that is a candidate for accession, currently in negotiations, traineeship possibilities are limited to national officials.

Trainees will be attached to a department and work as part of the team to which they are assigned.   They may be required, for instance, to attend meetings of working parties (and possibly Coreper and Council meetings), draft minutes or carry out preparatory work or research on a particular subject.   It should be noted that the languages most used at the General Secretariat of the Council are French and English.

Traineeships at the European Court of Justice

Every year, the Court of Justice of the European Communities offers a limited number of paid traineeships of a maximum duration of five months. Traineeships are generally undertaken in the Research and Documentation Directorate, the Press and Information Service, the Directorate-General for Translation or the Interpretation Directorate (for detailed rules regarding interpreting traineeships, see below).

There are two traineeship periods:

- from 1 March to 31 July (form to be sent before 1 October)
- from 1 October to 28 February (form to be sent before 1 May)

as evidenced by the postmark.

Applicants, who must hold a degree in law or in political sciences (majority content, law) or, for traineeships in the Interpretation Directorate, a diploma in conference interpreting, must print and complete the application form* and send it by post to the Human Resources Unit of the Court of Justice of the European Communities, L - 2925 Luxembourg, together with a detailed curriculum vitae and copies of diplomas and/or certificates.

In view of the nature of the working environment, a good knowledge of French is desirable.

Twice a year the European Economic and Social Committee offers traineeships for a period of five months to university graduates who are nationals of the Member States of the European Union, as well as to a number of university graduates from non-EU countries.

These periods of in-service training offer an opportunity to acquire professional experience in one of the EESC's departments. They begin on 16 February and 16 September of each year and take place in Brussels.

It is difficult to describe exactly the kind of work assigned to trainees, but it consists mainly of working with a mentor in drawing up records of meetings, carrying out research in a particular area, and in evaluating economic, financial and technical cooperation projects and programmes.
