The Role of the Representation
Interaction between the European Commission and Bulgaria
The main task of the Representation is to help Bulgaria and the European Commission communicate. The Representation in Bulgaria provides information on the work, aims, programmes and projects implemented by the European Commission to the Bulgarian society and media. The Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria informs the European Commission about the processes and events in Bulgaria.
Relations with the media
One of the main tasks of the Representation is to communicate with the Bulgarian media. The Representation informs the media about events and processes in the EU and, as a direct representative of the European Commission, informs Bulgaria on the work of the Commission. EC Representation drafts and distributes press releases, organises press conferences and interviews for the media representatives.
The EC’s Representations in the EU Member states are integrated within the Press and Communication Service of the Directorate General Communication in Brussels.
Key tasks and priorities are:

Cooperation with media – EC Representation in Bulgaria interacts with the national and regional media, informs about the EC’s activities, explains its policies and provides general information about EU affairs.

Political networking – EC Representation monitors and provides intelligence to the Commission on political, economic and social developments in Bulgaria, thus providing the Commission with feedback and stimulating informed debate on European Affairs.

General information to the citizen – Representation provides general information on the EU and helps to implement major information activities of the EC in Bulgaria. Representation co-operate also with European Parliament’s “Information Point” in Sofia.
Public Information
The EC Representation also ensures the Commission’s direct contact not only with politicians but also with citizen and contributes to effective information flows between Commission, other European institutions, national authorities and the media.
The EC Representation in Bulgaria takes part in the process of informing the public about the EU: by organising and hosting various events, usually with the help of different partners, including the Government and other state institutions, European Parliament Information Bureau in Bulgaria, non-governmental organisations and academic establishments. The Representation also keeps in touch with the partners of EU information network in Bulgaria.
