Conference "Commodities and Raw Materials: Challenges and Policy Responses"
Date: Tuesday 14 June 2011 Location: Brussels - Charlemagne Building, 170 Rue de la Loi

Commodities and raw materials are hot topics on the European and global agendas. Whether in agriculture, industry or the energy sector, their pricing and supply are key issues. Many are concerned that prices are too high and volatile; others worry about security of supply. How are prices in commodity markets set and what is the best way for individual countries and the European Union to guarantee secure supplies? Might high prices actually be beneficial in terms of stimulating increased supply and the development of alternatives? What kind of policy responses might be needed at the EU, G-20, WTO and other international levels? These are just some of the questions that this one-day conference will address.
The conference will serve as a contribution to the discussions currently ongoing in the G-20 and other international fora. The President of the European Commission, Mr José Manuel Barroso, and the President of the French Republic, Mr Nicolas Sarkozy, will deliver keynote speeches to the conference.
