Corfu European Council
The European Council of Corfu concentrated on discussing the different aspects of the White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment. Special emphasis was placed on: encouraging reforms in the member states destined to improve the effectiveness of employment systems; on quickly putting into place trans-European projects of first priority in the areas of transport and energy, and on completely exploiting possibilities and opportunities offered by the information and environmental society.In the area of foreign affairs, the European Council confirmed its attachment to the development of relations with the countries of the Mediterranean basin and to support for the peace process in the Middle East. The importance of European agreements with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe was underlined. The signature of the partnership and cooperation agreement with the Ukraine and the progress made in regards to the accession to the European Union of Cyprus and Malta were celebrated.The European Council expressed its opinion on the subject of Yugoslavia, Rwanda, the Stability Pact in Europe and on the non-proliferation of arms.Elsewhere, on the side of the European Council, took place the signature ceremony of the accession acts to the European Union of Austria, Sweden, Finland and Norway with the participation of the Heads of State and Government of those countries. Lastly, a partnership and cooperation agreement was signed between the EC and the Russian Federation.Thanks for their collaboration to: ERT, DR, RAI, CNN, RFO, RTBF, ZDF
