Environment Council, 3550th meeting: extracts from the common press conference, with the participation of Miguel Arias Cañete, and Karmenu Vella, Members of the EC
On 19 June 2017, the 3550th meeting of the Environment Council took place in Luxembourg. The Council discussed in public session the latest developments in the field of international climate change. The Ministers for the Environment expressed their views on the unilateral decision of the United States administration to withdraw from the Paris Agreement and welcomed unanimously the conclusions adopted on this matter at the Foreign Affairs Council the same day. The EU was committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The Council also held a debate on the two legislative proposals to cut emissions in sectors not covered by the emissions trading scheme: the effort-sharing regulation and the regulation on land-use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF). The Council adopted conclusions on the EU action plan for nature, people and the economy. The plan would improve the implementation of the nature directives so that they deliver their full potential. This video shows extracts from the joint press conference given by Miguel Arias Cañete, Member of the EC in charge of Climate Action and Energy, Karmenu Vella, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and José A. Herrera, Maltese Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
