EIB-financed waste water plant, Katowice, Poland
On December 7th, on the side-lines of the COP24 climate conference in Katowice (Poland), a European Investment Bank (EIB) delegation led by Vice-President Jonathan Taylor visited the wastewater treatment plant in Podlesie, south of Katowice. The Podlesie plant is one of the four wastewater treatment plant serving the city of Katowice. It is part of Katowicka Infrastruktura Wodociągowo-Kanalizacyjna Sp. z o.o., the city-owned operator supplying 100% of the Katowice population with water and 81% with wastewater services. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has lent at completion EUR 18.8m (80m PLN) to the company to co-finance its programme of investments between 2010 and 2016. The investment programme also received EU cohesion fund assistance and own funds form the company. The investment programme goal was to improve the quality and management of the collection and treatment of wastewater and storm water in the City of Katowice. The objective of the investment programme was to achieve compliance with EU Directives concerning wastewater collection and effluent standards. More specifically EIB investments were directed to:•upgrade of treatment facilities•new site infrastructure and•improved sludge management facilitiesWhich all contribute towards MITIGATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE. The project was successfully completed on time and the expected outputs achieved.The European Investment Bank (EIB) water and wastewater portfolio in Poland came to a total of circa EUR 1 billion over the last ten years.
