Hearing of the EESC: Towards an EU strategy for international cultural relations
On 1 March 2017, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held a hearing on a communication presented by the European Commission (EC) and the European External Action Service (EEAS), called 'Towards an EU strategy for international cultural relations'. In that communication, three work streams were outlined: supporting culture as an engine for sustainable social and economic development, promoting culture and intercultural dialogue for peaceful intercommunity relations, reinforcing cooperation of cultural heritage. These measures have the objective of making the EU a stronger global actor through taking advantage of complementarity and synergies in the cultural activities of Member States. The hearing, chaired by Carlos Manuel Trindade, Member of the European Economic and Social Committee, gave the occasion to the civil society, multilateral institutions and other culture operators to pronounce their opinion on the matter. This video shows Francesc Pla Castelltortort, Administrator of the Division of Culture and Cultural Heritage at the Directorate of Democratic Governance of the Council of Europe, Paolo Fontani, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels and UNESCO Representative to the European Institutions, Andrew Murray, Director of EUNIC, the European Union National Institutes for Culture and Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Member of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), giving the opinion of their own institutions on the question. The speeches were followed by a debate with the participants.
