On 6 October 2017, Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the EC in charge of Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, was in Malta in the framework of the 4th Our Ocean conference. He delivered a closing speech. He started his speech by thanking Joseph Muscat, Maltese Prime Minister, for the impressive conference, and John Kerry, Visiting Distinguished Statesman at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former US Secretary of State, for his leadership in the history of this conference. Then he explained his admiration for the marine biologist, Sylvia Earle, and how she raised his awareness concerning the emergency to protect oceans. He then said that the wakeup call to the cries of our oceans is now achieved and the next challenges are to take real actions and this is why politicians, business leaders, NGOs and academics are working together in order to achieve commitments. He mentioned the research and innovation as a key issue to protect the coastal communities from the threats of storms, tsunamis and rising sea levels. He then gave details on the European investments for example in the Plastics Strategy, which aimed to to tackle the broader issue of plastics pollution. He concluded by saying that education and awareness in the border public are crucial. Our Ocean conference is the yearly appointment for leaders, public administrators and businesspeople from all over the globe to interact and find workable solutions for the planet's seas and oceans. Our Ocean 2017 addressed the themes of marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate change.
