Agriculture and Fisheries Council, 3571st meeting: joint press conference by Phil Hogan, Member of the EC
On 6 November 2017, the 3571st meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council took place in Brussels. The Council was updated by the European Commission on the state of play of trade-related agricultural issues, and in particular on the negotiations with Mexico, Mercosur and in the WTO. Ministers welcomed the progress made but also expressed concern about the possible impact of free trade agreements on sensitive agricultural products such as beef, ethanol and sugar. They also encouraged the EC to involve Member States even more closely in the negotiations. The Estonian Presidency reported on the outcome of the high level conference on "Soil for sustainable food productions and ecosystem services", which took place in Tallinn in October. The EC then informed the Council about the results of its report on the sustainable use of pesticides. Ministers were also informed about the outcome of the Summit on "Equal quality of products for all" and the results of the Visegrad group meeting from 21 September 2017, and in particular its deliberations on the renewable energy directive and the ongoing BIOEAST initiative in the field of knowledge-based agriculture, aquaculture and forestry in the bioeconomy. This video shows the joint press conference given by Phil Hogan, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Tarmo Tamm, Estonian Minister for Rural Affairs.
