Conference Our Ocean, Valletta: session Building the Sustainable Blue economy
On 6 October 2017, Neven Mimica, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation and Development, took part in a series of presentations entitled "Building a Sustainable Blue Economy" held in the framework of the Our Ocean conference, organised by the EC in Malta. In his speech, he mentioned several projects in which the EC is committed in order to protect the oceans and develop the blue economy. The other participants were Hans Bruyninckx, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency (EEA), Pascal Lamy, Honorary President of Notre Europe - Jacques Delors Institute and moderator of the panel discussion, Laura Tuck, Vice-President for Sustainable Development of the World Bank, Jonathan Taylor, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Adam Goldstein, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Julien Marchal, General Secretary at DCNS Energies, and Maria Damanaki, Global Managing Director for Oceans at The Nature Conservancy. The video shows the entire session with an opening screenshow explaining the blue economy, an opening speech by Hans Bruyninckx, and the panel discussion. Our Ocean conference is the yearly appointment for leaders, public administrators and businesspeople from all over the globe to interact and find workable solutions for the planet's seas and oceans. Our Ocean 2017 addressed the themes of marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate change.

On 5 October 2017, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, and Karmenu Vella, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, gave a joint press conference to open the Our 4th Our Ocean conference. Our Ocean conference is the yearly appointment for leaders, public administrators and businesspeople from all over the globe to interact and find workable solutions for the planet's seas and oceans. Our Ocean 2017 addressed the themes of marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate change. In her Speech, Federica Mogherini said that oceans are a global common and the feeling of responsibility is better felt than before. Talking about consequences of human action such as pollution and climate change and their consequences like hurricanes, she said this is a man-made problem that needs man-made solutions, as climate change is man-made and needs man-made commitments. She also gave more details on maritime security by mentioning the investment for the satellite monitoring programme Copernicus and the other one for supporting alternative livelihood initiatives on the coastal pirate areas of Somalia. In his speech, Karmenu Vella gave details on the other non financials commitments of the EC to protect the oceans, such as the fight against IUU [Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing], against plastic litter and the work on the sustainable economy.
