Literacy in Europe in the framework of the "Europe loves reading" campaign

On 01/02/2011 in Brussels, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Laurentien, Princess of the Netherlands, gave a joint press conference on the Launch of the High-Level Group of experts in the field of literacy. Indeed, one in five 15-year-olds in Europe, as well as many adults, lack basic reading and writing skills, which made it harder for them to find a job and put them at risk of social exclusion. To help tackle the issue, the European Commission had set up an independent group of experts to identify ways of raising literacy levels. The group, which met for the first time today in Brussels, was chaired by Laurentien, Princess of the Netherlands, who was a Special Envoy on Literacy for Development for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). EU Ministers had set a target of reducing the share of pupils with difficulties in reading, maths and science to fewer than 15% by 2020.

EU High Level Conference on Education and Development: joint press conference by Andris Piebalgs, Androulla vassiliou, Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy on Global Education, and Laurentien, Princess of the Netherlands
On 23 May 2013, the EU High Level Conference on Education and Development took place in Brussels. The EC announced that at least 20% of the 2014-2020 aid budgets were foreseen for human development and social inclusion, education being a main component of it. As much as €2.5 billion would be mobilised for education, confirming it as a priority for EU development post-2015. At least €1.5 billion would go to the future "Erasmus for All" programme. Participation of Androulla Vassiliou at the 'Literacy for All' Conference in Nicosia
On 6 September 2012, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, attended the "Literacy for All" Conference organised by the Cypriot Presidency in Nicosia. She delivered a closing speech and held a press conference with George Demosthenous, Cypriot Minister for Education and Culture, and Laurentien, Princess of the Netherlands. The Conference introduced the work of the independent High Level Group of Experts of the European Commission for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth to identify ways of raising literacy levels. The aim of the conference was to share and discuss the final report of the Group with policy makers and researchers in every EU country. The results and the conclusions of the Conference will give the opportunity to draw on the follow-up actions needed by the EU Member States in order to have a strong political and societal attention to Literacy.

Youth Health Conference 2009: extracts from the opening session by Androulla Vassiliou, Laurentien, Princess of the Netherlands, Nata Menabde and Tine Radinja
Involving young people more actively in developing EU health policies is the aim of an initiative launched by Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Health. The initiative kicked off with a two-day conference on Youth Health in Brussels. Over 200 young people, from across Europe, aged between 18-25, met with policymakers and health organisations to debate key health issues, such as the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, or physical activity and mental health. Cross cutting issues, including the financial crisis, inequalities in health, education and the role of the media were also addressed. The conference was organised jointly with the European Youth Forum and accompanied by a multi-lingual website on the EU health portal which includes a blog where young people can have their say on health.
