General Affairs Council, 3219th meeting: extract from the press conference by Maroš Šefčovič

EU/Turkey Association Council, 51st meeting: extracts from the joint press conference by Eamon Gilmore, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Štefan Füle and Ahmet Davutoğlu, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs
On 27 May 2013, Eamon Gilmore, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ahmet Davutoğlu, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, held a press conference on the EU-Turkey Association Council. On this occasion, the EU reaffirmed the importance attached to its relations with Turkey, a candidate country and a key partner considering its dynamic economy and strategic location. It was underlined that active and credible accession negotiations which respect to EU's commitments and established conditionality, along with all other dimensions of the EU-Turkey relationship, would enable this relationship to achieve its full potential. In this regard, the EU welcomed recent progress towards the opening of Chapter 22 on regional policy and coordination of structural instruments, which could be completed in June 2013.

The EU/Turkey Association Council held its 51st meeting on 27 May 2013 in Brussels.The meeting was chaired by Ahmet Davutoğlu, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Eamon Gilmore, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and President in office of the Council of the EU, led the European Union delegation. Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, represented the European Commission.The meeting focused on how to strengthen momentum in the relations with the aim to open new chapters in the accession negotiations with Turkey.

In January 2013, Ireland began its seventh Presidency of the Council of the EU. On this occasion, the Members of the European Commission met with the Members of the Irish Government on 10 January 2013 in Dublin. José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, held a common press conference with Enda Kenny, Irish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, and Eamon Gilmore, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, after the meeting.The main priorities of the Irish Presidency are: people-centred recovery, investment in job-friendly growth and in Europe's resources and European engagement with the world.José Manuel Barroso underlined that 2013 marks an important anniversary for Ireland, as it celebrates 40 years as an EU Member State. Ireland has undergone a radical transformation since 1973, developing into a modern, open economy driven by hi-tech industry and global exports. In the last 40 years, peace has returned to Northern Ireland, Irish has become the 23rd official language of the EU and the country has joined the single currency.

On 6 May 2013, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, met with Martin Schulz, President of the EP, Alain Lamassoure, Member of the EP (EPP, FR), Chair of the EP Committee on Budgets, Enda Kenny, Irish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, and Eamon Gilmore, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, to discuss the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). The meeting paved the way to start political negotiations on the European Union's future budget 2014-2020 and on an amending budget for 2013.

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Martin Schulz, President of the EP, Enda Kenny, Irish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, and Eamon Gilmore, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. They gathered for a discussion on the Multi-Annual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020 and reached a political agreement. The main elements of this agreement were: more flexibility on both payments and commitments; frontloading of expenditure linked to youth employment, research, education and Small and medium enterprises (SMEs); and the possibility to increase the aid for most deprived people. This deal confirmed the agreement reached the past month for the 2013 amending budget.
