European Commission 2004-2009
The Barroso Commission took office just months after the accession of 10 new Member States, the biggest EU enlargement ever, followed by the accessions of Romania and Bulgaria in 2007.The near-doubling of the number of Member States enhanced the dynamism of Europe's economy, giving a new impetus to the Lisbon strategy for Growth & Jobs. Enlargement of the euro zone brought membership of the euro to 16 countries, and the stability of the euro, reinforced by a revised Stability and Growth Pact, and has acted as a major protective shield for Europe during the financial and economic crisis.Major new legislation has been agreed on the initiative of the Barroso Commission, to put the Single Market firmly at the service of citizens. For instance, through enhancing passenger rights in transport, cutting mobile phone charges, or facilitating cross-border payments. At the same time, the Commission has simplified the EU rulebook in line with its commitment to better regulation. The reforms of the last years have put Europe in a better shape, to respond to the current economic and financial crisis. But the EU has also been able to react to the changed outlook. Indeed, the European Economic Recovery Plan balances an immediate stimulus with the demands of long-term sustainable growth, and goes hand in hand with a fundamental overhaul of Europe 's financial system. The Barroso Commission has also introduced an ambitious agenda to fight climate change. So the EU has taken the lead, by committing itself to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, to increase the share of renewables to 20% and to boost energy efficiency by 20%.This archive video stockshot contains archive footage illustrating the following subjects:- Appointment of José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission;- Recovery plan;- Lisbon Treaty;- Climate change;- Growth and Jobs;- EU's role in the world;- Uniting Europe;- and Europe of citizens.
