Statement by José Manuel Barroso on the support group for Ukraine
Brussels - EC/Berlaymont
On 9 April 2014, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, made a statement at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, and announced the creation of the Support Group to technically assist Ukraine with the financial and political reforms the country needs. This Support Group will provide a focal point, structure, overview and guidance for the Commission's work to support Ukraine. It will also help mobilise Member States' expertise and further enhance coordination with other donors and the International Financing Institutions.

||Soundbite by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, (in ENGLISH): Today the Commission has created a support group for Ukraine. The goal of this support group is to help and assist Ukraine, not only in financial terms but also with technical assistance. It is important to have the support for the political and economic reforms Ukraine needs to become a sustainable, independent, modern country. This comes on top of the €11 billion support in grants and loans that I have announced some weeks before. And this also follows the signature of the political parts of the association agreement that took place here in Brussels with Arseni Iatseniouk, acting Ukrainian Prime Minister. So, this shows that the EU stands by Ukraine. We believe Ukraine can be an independent, stable, viable, democratic and prosperous country. And I want to make it clear that the European Union stands by Ukraine.
