Maria Damanaki, Member of the EC in charge of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, participated in the International Fishing Capacity Conference "Global Fishing Capacity – Less is more" on 13 and 14 March 2014 in Thessaloniki, Greece. On 14 March, she represented European Union in the signing of a joint statement on efforts to promote sustainable fishing capacity management on the globe scale with the United States, Japan, Philippines, Colombia and Indonesia. The Conference was held against the backdrop of the new external dimension of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy which strengthens the EU’s commitment towards sustainable fisheries management and aims at addressing overcapacity at the global level.
