Maria Damanaki, Member of the EC in charge of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, participated in the International Fishing Capacity Conference "Global Fishing Capacity – Less is more" on 13 and 14 March 2014 in Thessaloniki, Greece. On 13 March 2014, she delivered a speech entitled "Fishing Overcapacity: time to move forward at global level". Athanasios Tsaftaris, Greek Minister for Rural Development and Food and President in office of the Council, and Pierre-Yves Cousteau, Founder and President of the Cousteau Divers and Goodwill Ambassador of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), also made speeches, and Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, intervened via videolink. The Conference was held against the backdrop of the new external dimension of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy which strengthens the EU’s commitment towards sustainable fisheries management and aims at addressing overcapacity at the global level.
