On 1 January 2014, – on the 15th anniversary of the launch of the euro in 1999 – Latvia became the 18th Member State of the European Union to adopt the euro. On 10 January, Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Riga, Latvia, to attend a celebration ceremony of Latvia's accession to the euro area. On that occasion, they held a trilateral meeting with Valdis Dombrovskis, Latvian Prime Minister. The three leaders also held a joint press conference.
