On 11 December 2013, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, went to Kiev where she met with Opposition Representatives.
This visit occurred in the framework of the pro-European demonstrations which took place few days ago in the capital of Ukraine. Protesters opposed a customs union with Russia. President Viktor Yanukovych said he shelved the EU deal because it would put trade with Russia at risk.
