Statement by José Manuel Barroso on "REFIT - Fit for growth"

On 2 October 2013, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, made a statement on REFIT, the Commission's Regulatory Fitness and Performance Programme, aimed to ensure that EU legislation is fit for purpose.
In a Communication, the EC sets out in a concrete way, policy area by policy area, where it will take further action to simplify or withdraw EU laws, ease the burden on businesses and facilitate implementation. It is the result of a screening of the entire stock of EU legislation. The EC also announced the intention to publish a scoreboard to track progress at European and national levels in this regard.

||SOUNDBITE by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, (in ENGLISH) saying that the EC has adopted an important decision regarding REFIT, a programme to be sure that the EU's legislation is fit for purpose; it is lighter, it is cheaper and it is simpler; at European level, we have to focus on when Europe adds value; there are many areas where we need European regulation but there are other issues that can be better dealt with at national or regional level; saying that he is happy that there was such a consensus in the Commission regarding this agenda for better regulation; they have already been working on it, for instance reducing the administrative burden on companies by more than 75%; saying that he hope now that all in Europe and also in Governments in Member States, are committed to this modernization approach, to the simplification approach that is necessary to make life easier for the European companies, for the European citizens, and for promoting growth and jobs in Europe; the priority is growth and jobs.
