On 6 October 2013, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, travelled in Nicaragua in the context of the establishment of the new EU/Nicaragua cooperation programming for the period 2014-2020. One of the objectives of this visit was to strengthen EU/Nicaragua bilateral relations and ascertain the country's socio economic situation.

The project aims at supporting Nicaragua’s efforts to prevent and control organized crime and drug trafficking through a comprehensive and inter-institutional approach which will provide special attention to youth and to the most crime-affected areas in the Caribbean Coast.
