Launch of the Commission's Communication on Inland Waterways with the participation of Siim Kallas
On 10 September 2013, the European Commission announced new measures to get more freight onto Europe's rivers and canals.
On this occasion, in Strasbourg, Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, boarded a barge for a trip on the Rhine and made statements on the NAIADES II programme.
Barges are amongst the most climate-friendly and energy efficient forms of transport but currently they only carry about 6% of European cargo each year. The new proposals intend to realise the unused potential of Europe's 37,000 km of inland waterways. They will enable freight to move more easily and lead to further greening of the sector, as well as encouraging innovation and improving job opportunities.

||SOUNDBITE by Siim Kallas (in ENGLISH) saying that NAIADES II is the continuation of NAIADES I; it is a project to facilitate inland waterways as a mode of transport which is of course environmentally friendly; 500 million tons cargo per year means that 25 million trucks are not on the roads.
