Statement by Ryan Heath on a major upgrade of GEANT, the superfast pan-European research network

On 31 July 2013, Ryan Heath, Spokesperson of Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Digital Agenda, made a statement on a major upgrade of GEANT, the superfast pan-European research network that helped discover the Higgs Boson. Thanks to that upgrade, GEANT could reach speeds up to 2Tbps (terabits per second). From 31 July, capacity of up to 500Gbps is available across the core network. This means individual users across 32,000 universities, higher education institutes, research institutes, schools, libraries, museums, national archives and hospitals can transfer data at speeds of up to 100Gbps. Speeds like this will enable faster collaboration on critical projects and meet the rapidly increasing demand for data transfer capacity.

||SOUNDBITE by Ryan Heath, Spokesperson of Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Digital Agenda, (in ENGLISH) saying that when we think of broadband, normally we think about our connections at home or whether a business can get the connections that they need; but there is another category of users who rely on really fast internet to be able to do their jobs, and those are basically scientific researchers; GEANT is the very high speed network that connects a lot of our universities and research institutes together across Europe; it played a very important role in big scientific discoveries – like the Higgs boson - and what we've got now is a major network operator; so basically we are going to the front of the research pack in terms of having very high speed internet that allows the researchers to process the sort of data that is now becoming more and more important for them during their daily jobs.
||SOUNDBITE by Ryan Heath (in ENGLISH) saying that looking at some of the research topics that the scientists are dealing with these days - high energy physics, deep space research - trying to find patterns across thousands of data sets that exist from different researchers around the world, that requires very fast computers that can pull all of that data together and look for those patterns and help add to the knowledge that the different experiments and the projects are seeking to find; if you don't have the fast internet connections, the high performance computing that complements those connections, then it is very hard to be the best in your field; that is why the Commission is very committed to funding the GEANT project and has been doing that for a number of years; the network upgrade that has been announced is the result of what has been a long effort to make sure that the European researchers can be as competitive and at the leading edge as possible.
