On 18 July 2013, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, paid a visit to Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and former Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Cape Town, in Cape Town, South-Africa. They discussed the situation in Europe and in South Africa and global issues, in particular the fight against poverty, human development and empowerment of women. José Manuel Barroso praised Desmond Tutu's role in South Africa as a religious and civic authority. Desmond Tutu thanked the EU for its action and role in promoting peace and development throughout the world.
