On 15 July, Vigilijus Jukna, Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture, and Maria Damanaki, Member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, held the press conference of the (fisheries) Council.
They announced that the Fisheries Ministers agreed on a draft regulation establishing the criteria for distributing aids to the fisheries sector between 2014 and 2020, under the new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). The EMFF was the last piece of the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) that still needs to be settled.
Maria Damanaki outlined that the stock of fishes is really improving 'more in the Northern seas, less in the Mediterranean sea and the black sea where we still have problems'.
Regarding the dispute between Iceland and Faroe Islands, concrete decisions are expected by the end of the month, said Maria Damanaki.
Some Member States asked the European Commission to take measures against Iceland and the Faroe Islands due to mackerel 'irresponsible catch'.

||SOUNDBITE (in English) Maria Damanaki, Member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: The situation of the stocks is really improving, more in the Northern seas, less in the Mediterranean sea and the black sea where we still have problems. But I hope that through the reform, we can finalise this procedure of reaching sustainability. Then, about the dispute about mackerel and Atlantic herring, I have to say that we would like to have an agreement and we have tried very hard on that. But then that can destroy the stocks that are there because of the efforts of the EU and our fishermen. That is why we have to take all the measure to ensure sustainability of the stocks.
