On 25 June 2013, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, and Emma Bonino, Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, embarked on a visit to the camp of Syrian refugees of Zaatari, located in Mafraq, at the Syrian-Jordanian border. They visited a hospital and a school which had been recently refurbished. They urged on the need to maintain an open border policy for refugees and to coordinate all assistance closely with UN agencies and NGOs. During the visit humanitarian supplies provided by the Italian government were delivered to the refugees. It is Kristalina Georgieva's second visit to the camp in recent months and her first since José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, announced an increase in EU funding to the crisis of €400 million. The Commission and the Italian government appealed for matching funds from other donors and followed up this initiative through a joint assessment mission with EU Civil Protection experts. Kristalina Georgieva and Emma Bonino then went to Amman where she met with Abdullah II, King of Jordan, and Nasser Judeh, Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs.

10:03:26 Soundbite by Nasser Judeh (in ENGLISH): Many files that we have discussed today not least of all the ongoing crisis in Syria and the attempt that we are all exerting in order to bring about this political solution that will end the violence and go back to Geneva to implement the elements of Geneva I, which is a transitional Governing Body with mutual consent and full transfer of executive authority. Both of us have just come from a meeting in Doha of the London 11 Group and the position in the meeting was self-explanatory. 00:00:36
10:04:03 Soundbite by Emma Bonino (in ENGLISH): We looked at the country that 10% increase in the population in such a short time is in this high "spillover" – if somebody has another word, please welcome but I don't see any other possible vocabulary. And also I think that Europe, Commission and Member States can prove that in some fields we can be effective and we can deliver. We also listen to you and our support as much as possible not only before the refugees but would be also mostly for the local communities in Jordan who are of course bearing the cost of infrastructure, social services and so on. 00:00:41
10:04:45 Soundbite by Kristalina Georgieva (in ENGLISH): Yesterday the EC confirmed 400 millions euro increase in our support to handle the Syrian crisis, 250 millions for humanitarian assistance to the victims of the crisis inside Syria and the refugees in the neighboring countries and 150 millions to help Jordan and Lebanon to cope so that communities in these countries are able to sustain this enormous increase because what falls on you is to provide shelter, to provide schooling, medical care, water, police. 00:00:51
