||Soundbite by José Manuel Barroso (in ENGLISH): I think it is an important sign that you, Governor, come here to Brussels to share your passion and your commitment. You have been a fighter on the screens too long. You are a fighter in the real world, too. A fighter for a sustainable energy and for the climate future of our planet.

||Soundbite by José Manuel Barroso (in ENGLISH): Creating the conditions for a sustainable economy, with new job opportunities, new growth opportunities and higher competitiveness - in which climate change is kept at bay, renewable energy is increased and less energy is used. This is at the heart of European policies. It is also at the heart of our strategy Europe 2020. In today's meeting, we reinforced this common vision to respond to the concerns of citizens. People around the globe expect us to act; those affected by the floods in many parts of Europe and Asia; those suffering from drought and forest fires around the world; those being hit by tornadoes and floods in the United States. Governor Schwarzenegger and I believe that we must not leave these people alone. And that we can take our fate in our hands for the sake of our own and our children's future on this planet and for the sake of a sustainable and growing economy.

||Soundbite by Arnold Schwarzenegger (in ENGLISH): The whole world is waiting for an international Kyoto II treaty with common goals towards a sustainable energy future. There are a lot of challenges to get this treaty done, even tough there is great progress being made. We, the sub-national governments, mayors, governors, leaders of states or provinces have tremendous power. As Governor of the State of California, I did not wait for Washington or any international treaty to move forward very aggressively and pass great laws that became an inspiration to other states and other countries all over the world. This is why I created the R20 which is specifically for sub-national governments. I am very happy that we are signing an agreement to work together with the European Union in order to create a sustainable energy future.
