Type: Complete press conference

On 20 June 2013, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, travelled to Vienna, Austria and paid a visit to Werner Faymann, Austrian Federal Chancellor. On this occasion, they gave a joint press conference following their meeting and underlined that fighting youth employment and support to SMEs are European top priorities for the upcoming European Council, scheduled for 27-28 June 2013.
José Manuel Barroso also called for the next European Council to agree on practical measures to get Europe growing again, focused on youth employment and financing for SMEs. To drive forward an agreement at the European Council, the Commission has adopted three contributions on tackling youth unemployment, better regulation and the review of the compact for growth and jobs. These were adopted on the same date, with a fourth, a joint report with the European Investment Bank on increasing lending to the economy, to be adopted shortly. This package of initiatives will help Europe to make a difference in getting people back in work, allowing companies to hire staff and invest, and enabling banks to provide lending to the real economy. These contributions demonstrate that collective action at the EU level will have a bigger impact than isolated individual measures nationally.

||Soundbite by José Manuel Barroso (in ENGLISH): On youth unemployment, we are mobilising all the tools we have at European level to support Member States in combating youth unemployment. I hope that at the next European Council we will be in a position to turn commitments into determined actions. We have to address our citizens' needs even more vigorously and the most important concern at European level is the concern of employment. I believe it is time to develop a European consensus on the practical ways to resolve the crisis.
