||Soundbite by Alexander Chikwanda (in ENGLISH): It is with pleasure to welcome you, Commissioner Piebalgs, to Zambia. The European Union, whom you represent, has been an all season partner who has constantly sought to engage us in areas of cooperation to the benefit of our people. Sectors in which the EU has traditionally assisted us, such as health, education, energy, roads' infrastructure and agriculture have contributed significantly in taking development to our rural areas where the poor and most vulnerable, in our society are found. We are happy that beyond the support we have received in infrastructure, you have also supported us in the strengthening our public sector management.
Today's signing of the works contracts to rehabilitate the great east road from the Luangwa bridge to Miami border , valued at Euro 118.6 million , the memorandum of understanding for the up scaling of contribution farming amounting to Euro 11.1 million and the financing agreement for capacity building for non state actors amounting to Euro 5.5 million is a confirmation of the EU's commitment to ensuring its assistance is demand driven and in line with the national development plans and priorities (8 shots)
||Soundbite by Andris Piebalgs (in ENGLISH): And I am very grateful Minister what you have said that EU aid mattered. Well, development, cooperation does not change the country, people themselves change the country, and I would like to congratulate the achievements that your country has made in fighting poverty, developing the economy. It is never easy and it is really a lot of choices; and painful choices need to be made. And I am glad that today we signed the contract on the road together with (…) France Development. We will support very critical infrastructure that definitely will generate more economic income and meet economic growth. Because the thinking is the stage where is Zambia now? It is much more now. It’s not just alleviating poverty, but fighting poverty with inclusive and sustainable growth. That is also why agriculture is important. This conservation agriculture, I bit don’t like the word, because actually, any agriculture should be conservation agriculture that you use soil, well as a treasure that gives generations after us also the means to survive and also to live well.
So I believe this small project of 11 million Euros, it is a good continuation of the projects that we have, but I believe in the 11 CDF, we could expand our working on agriculture using the potential that the country has, not only to feed the country, but really to be one of the strongholds on world food supply (7 shots)
