||Soundbite by Máire Geoghegan-Quinn (in ENGLISH): First of all, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Commission are two of the biggest funders of the global health research. And over the last numbers of years, we have funded an enormous amount of research into HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa. Obviously, we have been doing these things in a cooperative way but not in a structured cooperative way up to now. So, what today's signing means is that we will work together, cooperate together, work out strategies together so that we that we don't have duplications, so that the combined amount of money is spent in a much more efficient and a much more effective way.

||Soundbite by Máire Geoghegan-Quinn (in ENGLISH): We are trying to achieve better medicines, better vaccines, as we move forward, that every year, we will have new vaccines, new medicines to deal with these diseases and that also in relation to areas where the Commission is very active for example in the European and developing countries clinical trial partnership that we will partner as we have in the past with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and that together our combined forces of money and influence can further develop the kind of health research that is necessary in sub-Saharan Africa. We think they have developed a lot and the foundation has contributed enormously. The European Commission has done an enormous amount as well but together I think we can do even more. That is certainly what Bill Gates feels, that this cooperation agreement can deliver. And obviously we will monitor it very carefully on both sides to make sure we are delivering what we promised.
