Participation of Siim Kallas in the 'long short walk' for road safety

On 6 May 2013, Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, took part in the 'Long Short Walk' event aiming at raising awareness on pedestrian road safety on the occasion of the European Road Safety Day. Siim Kallas walked from the Schuman roundabout to the Parc Cinquantenaire. After the walk, Siim Kallas visited a display and demonstration of advanced safety technologies. Among others, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, speed assist and tire monitoring system were on display.
The 2013 Road Safety Week, which took place from 6 to 12 May, was dedicated to pedestrian safety. It aimed at drawing attention to the urgent need to better protect pedestrians worldwide, generate action on the measures needed to do so, and contribute towards achieving the goal of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 to save 5 million lives.

||SOUNDBITE by Siim Kallas (in ENGLISH) saying that we still don't have good recipes to reduce the number of injuries, we don't have an exact plan on how to collect statistics about injuries; of course, all technical and safety improvements concerning the vehicles, concerning urban planning and roads are extremely important; saying that on behalf of the European Commission, he warmly welcomes the initiative of the car suppliers who have organized this exhibition to show what can be done to improve vehicles.
