These two Austrian inventors developed a damper system that facilitates the soft closing of furniture doors, drawers and wall cabinets. Derived from the suspension of an automobile and protected by numerous patents, 'Blumotion' is enjoying enormous market success worldwide and has become an industry standard in the field, with Austrian manufacturer Julius Blum exporting 96% of its products.

00:00:00 Oh what a kitchen has to endure every day! “Pst!” – without text 00:00:04
00:00:04 Doors and drawers are slammed shut. Banging – without text 00:00:03
00:00:07 A stress test for man and kitchen alike! 00:00:05
00:00:12 But it doesn’t have to be that way. The reason for the silence? A tiny invisible invention that is worth millions: shock absorbers for cabinet doors. This ingenious invention has earned Claus Hämmerle and Klaus Brüstle a nomination for the European Inventor Award. 00:00:17
The nomination was a huge surprise. We never thought that such a tiny thing could bring us a nomination for such a big award.” 00:00:08
00:00:37 The ingenious shock absorber idea was born here: in Voralberg, Austria. This region is known for its inventiveness. 00:00:13
That Voralberg has become such a Mecca for inventors is probably due to the beautiful scenery which is very inspiring. Of course the many companies that are based in Voralberg also provide a breeding ground for new ideas.” 00:00:17
00:01:07 With the kitchen shock absorber, the inventor team around Brüstle/Hämmerle has been an unqualified success. The amazing thing is that the idea worth millions came intuitively. 00:00:12
In the kitchen there is always lots of commotion. When you are working there, you notice there is lots going on, a lot of moving around. And the need to harmonize this motion and to quiet things down was rather obvious.” 00:00:17
00:01:36 The underlying technology is an engineering masterpiece. A piston absorbs the shock of closing doors and sinks into a chamber with hydraulic fluid. The plunger slowly depresses thus minimizing the impact and ensuring that doors close quietly. 00:00:22
00:01:58 Meanwhile, the inventors’ company has an annual turnover of over one billion Euros, all thanks to one little stick! When the team patented the invention in 2001, no one imagined that it would become such a huge international hit. 00:00:20
We are very proud that our invention is being used all over the world. This one here might end up in a kitchen in Brazil.” 00:00:09
00:02:27 A picture perfect success story! The European Inventor Award is one of the most coveted prizes for top inventors. Regardless of whether or not they take home the award in Amsterdam, the inventor team already sees itself as a winner. 00:00:18
The hope going in is obviously that we will win the award. But the nomination alone is a huge honour.” 00:00:13
00:02:58 On 28 May, we will know if the shock absorber of Hämmerle and Brüstle wins the prize in the category “Industry”. And we are all grateful that this invention takes the bang out of all our cabinet doors. 00:00:17
