The inventions of this Spanish railway engineer have made high-speed rail travel safer and more comfortable. He created a new method of ensuring a train’s wheels safely on track and keep their optimal position on the rails at all times, especially in mountainous regions, and allows trains to travel 30% faster when going though curving stretches. His inventions propelled the company Patentes Talgo into one of the top spots among manufacturers of high-speed trains worldwide.

TIME DESCRIPTION DURATION
00:00:00 This train is travelling at 350km per hour. Most passengers however don't notice a thing. They are sleeping or reading quietly. And when the train enters a curve, the event goes completely unnoticed. 00:00:12
00:00:12 The man who has made this possible: Spaniard Jose Luis López Gómez. He has developed a technology that makes travelling by high speed train faster, more comfortable and safer. And this has earned him a nomination for the European Inventor Award. This engineer has made it possible for passengers to drink their coffee in peace and without fear that the next corner could send the coffee flying. 00:00:30
00:00:42 IV Jose Luis López Gómez in Spanish „La nominacion, me ha supuesto, pues que al final, con mi edad un reconocimiento o una forma de reconocer los trabajos que hemos hecho.” Translation: "For a man of my age, this nomination is recognition for all of the work we have done." 00:00:11
00:00:53 This is the crux of Gómez' idea: Instead of rotating on an axel, each wheel rotates independently. 00:00:07
00:01:00 A computer system constantly monitors and corrects the wheel position. The result is that each wheel makes perfect contact with the rail. 00:00:09
00:01:09 For the passenger this means traveling at high speeds with no sudden jerks. 00:00:06
00:01:15 The Spanish company Talgo is a leading producer of high speed trains. Gómez' invention amounts to a completely new type of wheel control. 00:00:11
Translation: "Employing this system, we are able to move the wheel bearing so that the bar rests in the middle of the wheel. If at one point or another there is a decentering, the wheel bearing control realigns with the center." 00:00:21
00:01:47 With his research Gómez, has enhanced modern train technology with several important inventions. However, he is particularly proud of the wheel location optimization. 00:00:11
Translation: "I believe that the speed of the trains is always dependent on the technology that is currently available. With this patented system, it will be possible for the speed to reach 400, 450 kilometers per hour and beyond! " 00:00:19
00:02:17 Gómez is a nominee for the European Inventor Award in the category "Industry". His invention has produced great benefits for the general public. The award ceremony takes place on 28 May in Amsterdam. 00:00:15
00:02:32 Jose Luis López Gómez is going to make the journey as one might expect. 00:00:08
00:02:40 IV Jose Luis López Gómez in Spanish „Voy a viajar en tren a Amsterdan. He viajado varias veces en tren desde Madrid a Munich, Amsterdam y es un viaje encantador.“ Translation: "I am going to take the train to Amsterdam. I have often traveled from Madrid to Amsterdam and to Munich. It is a fantastic trip!" 00:00:13
00:02:53 One thing is for sure: The competition this year is particularly tough. But, having such a decisive influence on the future development of rail travel, Gómez has very good chances of winning the "Technology Oscar". 00:00:17
