RegioStars 2013 Winner: Inclusive Growth Category – Social innovation: creative responses to societal challenges - B-Roll
Many obstacles make it hard for people to find a job when they are over 45, have been out of work for some time, or have disabilities or health problems. The Individual Employment Paths project in Elblag, northern Poland, offers the expert assistance these people need to overcome the barriers and secure fulfilling occupations. Individual Employment Paths, co-funded by the European Social Fund, contributes to the EU’s cohesion policy objective of economic growth and job creation.

||Eliza Popławska-Jodko, Project Coordinator (PL): Within the individual employment path project a model for supported employment for people over 45 years old was developed, which covers also people who have been unemployed for a very long time or disabled. An important element of the model is the holistic approach to the customer, which includes their professional, health and psycho-social problems. This support may help them permanently enter the job market. We have succeeded in this. With the support of coaches, psychologists and career advisors all people covered by the model have been reinforced, while 80% of the customers found a permanent work place.
||Agnieszka Jurewicz, Head Teacher (PL): Good morning. My name is Agnieszka Jurewicz, I am the principle of the General Secondary Schools Complex no. 2 in Elbląg. There are many benefits from employing elderly people in such places as ours. First of all, this is a consequence of the nature of our institution. We educate young people and therefore the contact with elderly and disabled people seems to be particularly valuable. Of course, as an employer I pay attention to the fact how the future employee will fit into the reality of the school. This is why I decided to hire a person who, during the individual career path project, was able to acquire a number of precious skills, especially interpersonal ones, which will enable him to perform better at work. The experience of elderly people is very precious in jobs as the one performed by Henryk, i.e. a job of very versatile nature.
||Jola Pieckowiak, Job Coach (PL): Hello, my name is Jolanta Piechowiak. I am a coach at the Consultation Board for the Disabled in Elbląg. In the individual career paths project I was a coach of Mr Henryk Chudziński. My main task was to prepare Henryk as well as possible to enter the open job market. We focused mostly on preparing Mr Chudziński to do interviews, learning how to make a good impression and how to behave while talking to a potential employer and we prepared all the documents necessary for employment.
||Henryk Chudzińsk, School Caretaker (PL): I feel very good at my work and I am a fulfilled person who got his job thanks to the Board. My job is a challenge for me, it is my dream come true, so to speak. I am satisfied with my work. This job is not only satisfactory, it’s more, because the job I’m doing means that my dreams have come true.
||Mirosław Bancerz, Caretaker (PL): I had a Job before and my employer stopped to pay my wages. The contract was terminated at the employer’s fault. Later the ophthalmologist did not allow me to driver heavy vehicles, and I used to driver trucks. I have an eye condition, glaucoma, and my sight was getting worse. I tried to get a job driving smaller cars, but my age was a barrier. As soon as they found out that I was 58 years old they said "thank you". I am a maintenance worker. I have qualificatiosn for gas and electrical works, you can say I do everything. I replace the bulbs, watermeters, washers, pavement slabs, I repair playgrounds. I do everything that needs to be done. The person responsible was Hanna Orłoś. When I finished the course it took less than a week – I don’t know what that girl was doing so that I could get a job. Before, when I was looking for work, it seemed to me I was unnecessary. I was 58, and they were looking for young people. And now? My wife is happy I’m not at home. I’m out all the time… I just feel fulfilled. When you work around people, you feel needed.
