00:12:51 Cutaway of the room 00:00:05
00:12:56 SOUNDBITE by Connie Hedegaard (in ENGLISH) saying that you need to put a price on pollution, on emissions, on energy and other resources if you want to create the right incentive; that is actually what is done in the EU through the emissions trading scheme. 00:00:27

00:16:31 Cutaways of the conference (3 shots) 00:00:14
00:16:45 SOUNDBITE by Connie Hedegaard (in ENGLISH) on the draft text: saying that it is not as ambitious as we would have liked in Europe but it's progress; now it is up to all the States of the world to carry on with this process and to use the hooks that we have got into the text; for instance, for the first time ever the green economy is mentioned in a UN text; she knows from her experience with UN systems that when a word has come into a text, you cannot take it away again; so there is something to work on and they will have to work very hard to secure the follow up from Rio. 00:00:52

00:18:13 SOUNDBITE by Connie Hedegaard (in ENGLISH) saying that they were asked whether they were optimistic or pessimistic about the future; of course she is optimistic; if you are a politician, you need to believe that you can solve the challenges in front of you; it might be difficult but it is doable and 'Sustainia' actually shows how we could do it. 00:00:24

00:22:51 SOUNDBITE by Janez Potočnik (in ENGLISH) saying that the EU has proposed committing to a zero net rate of land and soil degradation to be achieved within an internationally agreed timeframe; the good news is that the document now on the table of Heads of State or Government does recognize the economic and social significance of good land management including soil, particularly its contribution to economic growth, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture and food security, eradicating poverty, women's empowerment, addressing climate change and improving water availability. 00:00:38

00:24:47 SOUNDBITE by José Manuel Barroso (in ENGLISH) saying that he warmly welcomes that one of the main outcomes of Rio+20 is precisely the agreement on the need for a transition to a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; some time ago, even the concept green economy was not widely accepted, and today it is recognized by the global community as an indispensible tool for sustainable development; we believe in Europe that the green economy is a key instrument for sustainable development; this means to promote an economy that respects the boundaries of our planet, creates decent jobs, fosters social cohesion, tackles poverty and enhances food security. 00:01:01
00:25:48 Cutaway of the audience 00:00:05
00:25:53 SOUNDBITE by José Manuel Barroso (in ENGLISH) saying that Rio+20 gives a global opportunity to unite behind the sustainability agenda, including the inclusive green economy; the priorities promoted by the European Union are as much about the environment as they are about social empowerment and poverty eradication; these dimensions are linked; similarly, the cross-cutting issues that have been highlighted at Rio, in particular in the social dimension, will ensure that these priorities are properly achieved; but, for true success at Rio+20, and indeed in the years ahead, we need active participation from all actors and at all levels; we will not achieve success from Rio+20 with governments alone; the challenge will be to achieve a real commitment from non-State actors to action at international, national and sub-national level. 00:00:57

00:31:53 Cutaway of the Commissioner 00:00:05
00:31:58 SOUNDBITE by Andris Piebalgs (in ENGLISH) saying that an additional aspect of this issue is how you deal with food scraps in big cities, because even there you can reprocess what is left after the meals and with that you create compost and produce small vegetable gardens where you have some fruits close to your home; so it is remarkable what you can achieve; we need to support the initiative because it is in everybody's interest. 00:00:35
