
On 12 January 2010, Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake which caused the death of 212 000 people and massive destruction of critical infrastructure. The EU started providing assistance in the days immediately following the disaster. It is the biggest global donor to Haiti and one of the main actors on the ground there, working together with EU Member States and the international community.
Haiti's recovery continues to be a priority for the EU, and it is committed to a long-term engagement aimed at putting the country on the longer path to development and lasting poverty reduction.
