Type: Best-of   Référence: I067454   Durée: 21:23  Lieu: Brussels - Royal Palace
On 4 and 5 October 2010, Asian and European leaders gathered for the 8th Asia/Europe meeting in Brussels to address global challenges and the relationship between the two regions. They sought to strengthen their political dialogue and enhance their trade and investment relationship. The summit aimed at expanding cultural exchanges and further developing ASEM as a common strategic asset. It was the occasion to prepare the G20 meeting which would take place in November 2010 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Talks also focused on the 16th Conference of the Parties of the Climate Change Convention which would be held a few weeks later in Cancun, Mexico, to pursue the efforts started at the Copenhagen Summit of December 2009.

00:10:13 Soundbite by Herman Van Rompuy (in ENGLISH): we took two concrete decisions, to improve our relations with Asia; firstly, we decided to substantially help an Asian country after it was so severely struck by devastating floods with more aid and more trade; secondly, we found internal consensus to sign the first free trade agreement with an Asian country; this will stimulate economic growth and create jobs in both our regions; because the Asian economies are increasingly integrated, it will boost economic relations between the EU and other Asian countries as well, and it will pave the way forward for other agreements. (4 shots) 00:00:52
00:11:05 Soundbite by Wen Jiabao (in CHINESE) saying that they should step up cooperation on international supervision and regulation; they must be fast on advocating and supporting free trade, relatively oppose protectionism, and work for early equitable and balanced outcomes of the Doha Round negotiations on the basis of the existing text; they must work together to address major global challenges; they must make consolidated efforts to meet the climate challenge under the principle of common responsibilities. (3 shots) 00:00:41
00:11:46 Soundbite by Yves Leterme (in ENGLISH): we should focus on the elimination of poverty; economic growth is necessary but not sufficient; you also have to spread the fruits of that growth more equitably between as well as within countries; pockets of extreme poverty persist, sometimes in the immediate facility of ostentatious wealth; this kind of inequality is not acceptable; to reduce and eliminate it is not only a moral imperative, it is also a matter of enlighted self-interest, for extreme inequality carries the seeds of grave instability and disorder as well on the national level as on the international level. (3 shots) 00:00:48
00:12:34 Soundbite by Hun Sen (in CAMBODIAN) saying that at the global level, they are committed to exploring and using all means and efforts in order to finalise Doha negotiations on development agenda as soon as possible; they are committed to enhance cooperation in agricultural and rural development which is important for poverty reduction and especially assuring food security. (2 shots) 00:00:28
00:13:02 Soundbite by José Manuel Barroso (in ENGLISH): this is high time for joint action; we must agree on a balanced set of decisions in Cancun which brings a global agreement closer; people to people contacts are also a very important chapter in our European-Asian partnership; the EU is making substantial efforts to reach out to peoples of Asia, by funding many programs in this area: the Jean Monnet professorships at Asian universities, the Erasmus Mundus scholarships for Asian students, for example; we will spare no efforts to enhance the visibility and transparency of the Asian process by funding initiatives such as the Asia/Europe foundation, involving and supporting people to people intellectual, cultural, civil society dialogues. (3 shots) 00:00:51
00:13:53 Soundbite by Lee Myung-bak (in KOREAN) saying that Asia and Europe will be able to achieve a win-win situation by working closely within the framework of ASEM; the two continents should try to implement good governance by harmoniously dealing with common tasks, as well as whatever differences they may have; through these efforts, they will bring about a more dynamic, equitable global village; saying that he firmly believes these are the direction and values they should pursue in the years to come; he trusts this summit will yield valuable measures conducive to the enhancement of the quality of life throughout the world.
