In spite of record breaking energy prices, ever increasing worry concerning the security of supplies and clearly visible climate change, Europe continues to waste at least 20% of its energy. The cost of inefficient energy use will be over 150 billion euros by 2020 if prices and present consumption levels are maintained. In its Green Paper entitled “European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy” the European Commission underlines the need for a reinforced energy policy for Europe in order to realise the EU’s objectives. In reply to the Green Paper, the Spring European Council called for the elaboration of an ambitious and realistic action plan on energy efficiency, and set out a list of specific actions to be carried out. A. Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, will define the Action Plan on 19/10/2006. The Action Plan proposes a selection of profitable initiatives whose aim is to improve energy efficiency which should be put in place and carried out over the next 6 years. Other action plans will be necessary to obtain full potential by 2020.
