Renovation of the Berlaymont

Type: Best-of   Reference: I-023803   Duration: 10:12:27  Lieu: Brussels - EC/Berlaymont
End production: 20/03/1998
The removal of asbestos in the Berlaymont building in Brussels is coming to an end. The basic operation, which was responsible for the removal of more than a thousand tons of asbestos sheeting since 1995, will be finished in May 1998. However the evacuation of the last hundred kilos of asbestos will take an additional year. By 1999, all the old structure of the Berlaymont will have disappeared and the concrete and iron framework will be accessible for a complete remodelling. The European Commission will be re-admitted to the building in 2002.
