European Parliament adopted today a report presentation by Jan Philipp ALBRECHT (Greens/EFA, DE) and Dimitrios DROUTSAS (S&D, EL) about data protection. The report is about set to insert stronger safeguards for data transfers to non-EU countries when the House votes on Wednesday on a major overhaul of the current EU data-protection laws. The new rules seek to give people control over their personal data while at the same time making it easier for companies to move data across Europe. Fines imposed on firms that break the rules will be increased.

||SOUNDBITE (English): Jan Philipp ALBRECHT (Greens-EFA, DE) Rapporteur :
"We're having a very important vote, it's on the Single Data Protection regulation, I think very much that the Rapporteur, the shadow rapporteurs and all the political groups, we have reach such a far consensus and a very good compromise in this House on the data protection regulation. And let me call once again on the Council to really come up with a general approach, after two years of negotiation we can expect that to happen, so that we can present the European citizens a good regulation which protects the fundamental rights to data protection and creates a Digital Single Market. Thank you." (applauses)
