European Parliament widens its doors; also offers insight into Alsace's historical path from war to European peace
European Parliament President Martin Schulz will sign an agreement with the Port of Strasbourg allowing visitors to the city of Strasbourg who take a boat tour through the city to disembark at the Parliament and get a guided visit there. A separate agreement provides for visitors to the European Parliament to combine their introduction to the EP with a visit to the "Memorial d'Alsace-Moselle", which offers an insight into the region's war-torn history from 1870.
Visitors to the city of Strasbourg who book a tour on one of its sight-seeing boats will from March 2014 be able not only to pass by the European Parliament buildings, but actually to disembark and get a guided tour on its premises. The visit to the EP will be free. Twice a day, a group of maximum 50 people will be able to visit the site of the Parliament, including the chamber, and attend a talk followed by a session of questions and answers. The total visit would last a little over two hours.
In a separate move, the European Parliament will sign an agreement with the Region of Alsace, which will grant visitors to the Parliament's site in Strasbourg free access to the Memorial d'Alsace-Moselle. The Memorial, situated near the former concentration camp of Schirmeck, gives a moving insight into the region's war-torn history from 1870.
The Parliament will help set up a new exhibition at the memorial called EU-PHORIA, which will specifically trace the region's history from the end of World War II to the present day.

||SOUNDBITE (French), Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "It is a cooperation which represents to the citizens of Europe the reality of Europe of the 21. century, which is a fascinating transnational reality, which expresses itself in this House, despite the past of this continent which is rather poor, so I believe it is one of the best decisions we have ever taken during the last few years. Thank you Mr. Ferry and Mr. Richert."
