Type: News   Reference: 95261   Duration: 00:05:07  Lieu: Strasbourg, France - European Parliament
End production: 10/12/2013   First transmission: 10/12/2013
A non-binding resolution demanding comprehensive sex education for girls and boys, action to prevent unwanted pregnancies and guaranteed equal access to contraception and to safe and legal abortion was rejected today. Instead the House adopted an laternative motion supported by EPP, ECR and NI MEP's. Voting : 696 ; In favour : 334 ; Against : 327 ; Abstentions : 035. The House voted for the second time on this issue after the original text was sent back to the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee in October for further discussion. The rejected amended resolution demanded that women should be granted access to contraception and to legal and safe abortion. Although sections calling for "sex education (...) in a safe, taboo-free, interactive atmosphere between students and educators" and for “access to fertility treatments and assisted medical procreation for single women and lesbians” had been taken out of the revised text, it failed to obtain the support from the House.
