00:00:12 SOUNDBITE (English) Valeria GOLINO, director of movie "Miele", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: (about the theme of eutanasie that film touches) "Why would I spend so much time with such a hurtful theme, something that can seem painful. But I thought it is something that in a way interests me a lot, that other people must be interested in the same thing too. We don't talk about it enough. It's something that has to do with all the planet, all of Europe, each country, all of us intimately." 00:00:37
00:00:49 SOUNDBITE (English) Valeria GOLINO, director of movie "Miele", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: "It is about all of us but we pretend a little bit for quiet living not to deal with it. 00:00:11
00:01:00 SOUNDBITE (English) Valeria GOLINO, director of movie "Miele", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: "I tried to make a movie that was not ideological and it was not about who's right and who's wrong, but about something a littgle bit more mysterious than that." 00:00:10
00:01:10 SOUNDBITE (English) Valeria GOLINO, director of movie "Miele", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: "I knew that what seemed an obstacle which is the theme, it was also going to be the vehicle for this movie. If the movie came out good enough, it would have been heard because of it. So I didn't expect it to have success or not, that was not even in my head exactly but I knew that this thing was important to talk about." 00:00:29
00:01:39 Ambience shot with Felix Van GROENINGEN , director of movie "The Broken Circle Br'eakdown", Lux Prize 2013 finalist. 00:00:03
00:01:42 SOUNDBITE (English) Felix Van GROENINGEN , director of movie "The Broken Circle Br'eakdown", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: "This movie is based on the theatre play and when I saw it for the first time I was blown away, I cried for an hour and a half and I was touched and this theatre play made me think about life and death and love and the things that matter really in life. So I tried to turn this into movie and now I'm trying to turn it into a cinematic experience and that's what we did." 00:00:28
00:02:10 SOUNDBITE (English) Felix Van GROENINGEN , director of movie "The Broken Circle Br'eakdown", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: "I just came back from Berlin, where the European Film Awards took place and I heard a lot of people complaining, people from Italy, people from Spain, people from Portugal, the crisis has done very bad things for their subsidies and for making films. But in Belgium right now this is not really the case, I mean I have to be honest about this and politicians have done a lot of good things. There are a lot of ways to raise money for films." 00:00:36
00:02:46 SOUNDBITE (English) Felix Van GROENINGEN , director of movie "The Broken Circle Br'eakdown", Lux Prize 2013 finalist: "As a filmmaker you want your film to be shown. That's what it is about and the whole organisation of the Lux Prize takes a lot of effort in doing so, they translate the movie in all the languages, so also the territories and the countries where the movie isn't sold, it won't be shown there so that's fantastic." 00:00:27
00:03:13 SOUNDBITE (English): Clio BARNARD, director of 4The Selfish Giant', UK: "For me in some ways with 'The selfish giant' specifically I wanted it to be a film that was for young people, that was about and for young people, and I think if we limit the kind of films the young people are watching then we do them a disservice, so I think making sure that films that aren't kind of candy floss films that have a content, that young people can really relate to is very important. I think getting films out there and making them accessible is really important." 00:00:43
00:03:56 SOUNDBITE (English): Clio BARNARD, director of 4The Selfish Giant', UK: "The lead character is a boy called Alba is based on a real boy that I met, called Matty and so I spend a lot of time with him and with his mother in the scrap yards around Bradford. So it is based on reality, but it is a fable, I turned it into fiction." 00:00:24
00:04:20 SOUNDBITE (English): Clio BARNARD, director of 4The Selfish Giant', UK: "I have seen the other two films and I think it is a very amazing selection. I think the people who selected them did a really great job, because all of them have political in some way and some kind of political content but none of them is didactic, all of them are very complex." 00:00:23
00:04:43 SOUNDBITE (English): Clio BARNARD, director of 4The Selfish Giant', UK: "Perhaps these 3 films, there are not easy in the best possible way, in what they address. They examine the real complexity, the kind of emotional complexity really of the subjects they tackle." 00:00:16
