"The Broken Circle Breakdown", a musical love story about a Belgian couple coping with a tragic loss, won the European Parliament's 2013 LUX Prize for cinema. The LUX Film Prize is awarded every year to films that promote European cinema, values and social issues. The 2013 shortlist of three finalists also included the English film "Selfish Giant", directed by Clio Bernard, and "Miele", an Italo-French film by Valeria Golino. Parliament gives the award each year to help promote films that go to the heart of the public debate in Europe. Films which have made it onto the shortlist have been subtitled in all of the EU's 24 official languages and were shown to the public during LUX Film Days in all 28 Member States. The final winner is chosen by a ballot of EPs.

Only the original language version is authentic and it prevails in the event of its differing from the translated versions.

European films, and I'm sure that these 3 films that our Jury selected tell stories about who we are or who we could be.They also tell stories about our every day life. These three films, in a very moving way, tell every day life stories as well. I've seen the three films. Ladies and gentlemen, European films help to create a cultural consciousness for Europe. Film makers do not need us, European politicians, but we politicians need you, the film-makers. Stories and emotions can help to develop identity. European films boost a feeling of togetherness in Europe." 00:01:10

I'll talk in English because it's bit weird to talk in Dutch, I know that it will be translated in all languages but I prefer talking in English. It's an incredible honour to know that the MEP's actually chose my film, so you all watched it and voted for it, thanks so much. I think the LUX Prize is a great initiative. It makes you actually watch these films and vote for them, those are films that you would not see otherwise, so in a way it is educating you, which is great (applauses) And on the other hand the Lux Prize is great because it goes out in the territories, it goes to all the European Countries, and shows those films, and that's why you make films, it's because you want to show them to people. So, in every level this Prize is very helpful, so thanks a lot, Mrs Doris Pack and thanks to the whole Lux Prize team, thanks a lot." 00:01:18
