Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho is to meet the presidents of the European Parliament Martin Schulz. Talks focused on Portugal’s position regarding the multi-annual community budget Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho‘s government wants to make cuts in civil servants‘ salaries, the number of public employees, pensions and health spending while raising some indirect taxes to meet bailout terms set by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. The two institutions granted Portugal a 78-billion-euro bailout in 2011. Lisbon is due to wrap up its bailout programme and to return to markets for financing in mid-2014. The budget has to gain final approval in parliament by the end of November.
