Vote on Serious cross-border threats to health:

A draft law on EU's ability to cope with cross-border health threats such as the coronavirus, the 2011 E coli outbreak or the H1N1 flu epidemic in 2009 was put to vote. The legislation, already agreed with the Council, provides for a Europe-wide health emergency to be declared, with a provision facilitating member states bulk ordering of vaccines. The current EU system will be strengthened to provide a faster response that is better coordinated at EU level. The greatest achievement will be the creation of a legal basis for coordinating the purchases of vaccines and medication in Europe. This will facilitate group purchases of medicines by Member states. Access to vaccines will be fairer as they will be purchased at advantageous prices. An important step forward, especially for smaller member states, which simply can't afford to pay the exorbitant prices charged in recent pandemics. EU will also be able to launch the production of vaccines itself, which should in time lead to a quicker vaccination in urgent situations. Finally, contrary to the original proposal, the report also address cross-border health treats due to ionising radiation.
